Have you ever been on a trail and wondered, “Who has the right of way?” Or maybe you’ve encountered a cyclist coming up behind you, a dog running loose, a group blocking the trail, or someone playing music loud enough for the entire forest to hear.

Trail etiquette isn’t complicated—but knowing a few simple guidelines can make the outdoors safer, more enjoyable, and more welcoming for everyone.

In this course, we’ll explore the unwritten rules of the trail and, more importantly, the awareness behind them. You’ll learn how to share trails with hikers, runners, cyclists, horseback riders, families, dog walkers, and others who may be enjoying the outdoors for very different reasons.

We’ll cover:

• Common right-of-way guidelines and how to safely pass other trail users
• How to communicate when approaching or passing someone from behind
• Being considerate of groups, noise, and people seeking a quieter outdoor experience
• Hiking with dogs, including leashes, controlling your pet, and dealing with dog waste
• How to share the trail safely with horses and other trail companions
• Basic Leave No Trace principles and ways to minimize your impact on the natural world
• Respecting wildlife, plants, trails, and other natural features
• Simple ways to become a more aware and considerate trail user

But this course isn't about becoming the “perfect” trail user or memorizing a long list of rules. It’s about learning to notice what—and who—is around you.

Sometimes the difference between being considerate and being inconsiderate is simply noticing.

Whether you're a new hiker, an experienced trail user, a dog walker, cyclist, runner, birder, photographer, or someone who simply enjoys spending time outdoors, you'll come away with practical ideas for becoming a better trail neighbor.

Because the trail belongs to all of us—and to the wildlife and natural communities that call it home.
