Birding For Beginners: Become a Confident Birder
Learn to identify birds, understand their behavior, recognize bird songs, and build confidence through real birding adventures in the field.
Have you ever watched a colorful bird land in your backyard and wondered, "What is that?" Or taken a walk through the woods and wished you could identify the birds singing all around you?
If so, this course is for you.
Birding for Beginners: Become a Confident Birder is designed for anyone who wants to start birding but doesn't know where to begin. You don't need expensive equipment, years of experience, or an encyclopedic memory. All you need is a sense of curiosity and a willingness to spend a little time outdoors.
Unlike many birding courses that focus on memorizing hundreds of species, this course teaches you how to think like a birder. You'll learn simple observation techniques that help you identify birds using their size, shape, behavior, habitat, and field marks. As your confidence grows, you'll naturally begin recognizing more birds wherever you go.
Best of all, we'll learn where birding happens—outside.
Much of this course is filmed on nature trails, in forests, wetlands, parks, and backyards, so you'll feel like you're joining me on a series of guided bird walks. Along the way, I'll share stories from my years as an environmental educator and licensed bird bander, along with practical tips that will help you become a more confident observer of the natural world.
In this course you'll learn how to:
Identify common birds using simple observation techniques.
Choose and use binoculars, field guides, and birding apps with confidence.
Understand how habitat, behavior, and the seasons help you find birds.
Recognize several common bird songs and calls.
Attract more birds to your own backyard.
Practice ethical birding while respecting wildlife and their habitats.
Build lifelong birding skills through fun Field Challenges that get you outside.
This course is designed to be practical, relaxed, and enjoyable. After each section, you'll complete a short Field Challenge that encourages you to put your new skills into practice. You won't just watch videos—you'll head outside and experience birding for yourself.
Whether your goal is to identify the birds visiting your feeder, enjoy walks with greater awareness, or begin a rewarding new hobby, this course will give you the confidence to get started.
So grab a pair of binoculars—or simply your curiosity—and let's head down the trail together.
Your birding adventure begins here.
